Where Broken Wings Fly: A Small Town Reverse Harem Romance (Briar Valley Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 2,376 ratings

From the bestselling author of Blackwood Institute and Sabre Security comes a small town, why choose romance featuring a determined single mother running from her past and the three smoking hot mountain men that give her a new home.

I’m on the run.

Desperate and afraid.

After breaking free from the gilded cage of my abusive marriage, I have nothing to my name but a letter from a long-lost relative.

Come home, Willow.

Your family is waiting for you.

I sacrificed everything to flee for the tiny town of Briar Valley and its promise of a better life for my young daughter.

Hope often takes the unlikeliest of forms, but I didn’t expect to find it nestled among the rugged, snow-capped mountains.

Nor did I intend to surrender my heart to three tortured mountain men, hiding from their own grief in the thick forest of pine trees.

Briar Valley offers a home to all lost things, but at what cost?

I have to make an impossible choice.

Do I spend the rest of my life running from the demons in my past, or should I risk it all in the name of love?

Author’s Note: Where Broken Wings Fly (Briar Valley #1) is a spicy small town reverse harem romance and book one in a duet. It does end on a cliffhanger. Full trigger warning available inside the book. Set in the J Rose shared universe.

Beautiful story of healing and growth with dark themes
I’m convinced J Rose can write just about anything. She’s taken us from the dark and twisty asylum of Blackwood, to a crazy cultist’s basement and the Sabre Security boardroom, and now the isolated mountain retreat of Briar Valley, in her latest small town why choose romance. The first couple of chapters introduce us to Willow and paints a very detailed picture of her trauma. While tough for me to get though at times, I do understand why J Rose started things off this way, and believe it necessary to experience the full picture of Willow’s character growth and transformation. I did want to make sure I flagged these first few chapters because they are graphic and J Rose doesn’t shy away from the detail. So make sure to heed the trigger warnings. I mentioned character transformation, and Willow’s is truly remarkable. J has carefully constructed a vulnerable yet fierce survivor in Willow. Each of her love interests plays an important role in Willow’s growth. What I appreciate about these characters is that J Rose doesn’t really write the typical prototype MMC. Her characters are flawed and complex, they are far from perfect physically and emotionally, yet sexy all the same. This book has very dark themes, but does have a much lighter small town overall vibe to it. There’s healing, self growth and discovery, and found family. The romance is spicy and sweet, a medium burn which felt paced perfectly. This book ends on a cliffhanger and I will be anxiously awaiting book 2!

Where Broken Wings Fly is beautifully heartbreaking. It’s a story about survival and having the courage to find the light after only knowing true darkness. It’s a story about how much a mom loves her child. It’s a story about 3 men who would do anything for the woman they love and her daughter.

I love that Briar Valley is this incredibly small town up in the mountains that is a place of refuge and acceptance for so many who live there. This small group of people do things a bit differently, but they protect and support each other no matter what. It’s truly the perfect setting for this book. Willow and Arianna needed this place and these people to help them heal and learn what it means to live.

Killian, Micah and Zach are the perfect family for Willow and Arianna. I love that Killian is this gruff mountain man but is an absolute marshmallow when it comes to the whims of 7 year old Arianna. Zach is the perfect golden retriever hero for Willow. He has a lightness to him that her and Ari really need in their lives. Micah is so sweet and caring, but is no stranger to mental illness. He is able to recognize and connect with those parts of Willow that no one else can.

This is an incredible story, and I’m so excited to see what happens in the next book!

i read this book in 1 day & it was nearly 500 pages 🫣 on top of finishing 1/2 of another book!! first things first, ⚠️⚠️ CHECK TW ON THIS STORY ⚠️⚠️ because it is very dark right off the bat, and there are a few other scenes throughout that could be triggering as well. the author has a list of TW before the book starts, but i’d maybe do some additional research if you’re worried about it.

the book does give 4 POVs (willow + the 3 men) and while i get why we did it, sometimes it got a little confusing. each boy has some different traits and they do show in their individual POVs i feel.

if you read credence, i have a heavy feeling you’ll like this story! vibes are very similar. taboo relationship, mountain men in a secluded area, etc.

i will say. some of the spicy scenes were .. at weird times? like our FMC is going through one of the most traumatic times of her life & we decide to fix it with 🍆 ? a little icky imo. + the story was almost 500 pages, which is too long for a romance, also imo. i skimmed quite a bit and skipped through some parts entirely because there wasn’t anything important happening.

This book was sent to me for my honest review in preparation for book #2 to be sent out as an ARC. Thank you!

Man, J Rose knows how to write trauma. Not just the light, surface-skimming stuff that’s easy to swallow, but the heavy, gut-wrenching, intestine-twisting kind of pain that makes you clench your eyes shut to make it go away. But when you open your eyes, things are 10x worse.

We meet Willow at 16 years old - she’s just lost her dr*g-add!cted dad, and she’s struggling to pay his debts. Unfortunately, she catches the eyes of an unhinged older man and before she knows it, Willow is living the worst life imaginable. After ten long years, Willow and her daughter Arianna are on the run from the ab*sive Mr. Sanchez, and they finally reach the safety and tranquility of Briar Valley. There, they meet Killian, Zach and Micah, and slowly begin to build a new life and some trust. But things can’t stay perfect forever, can they?

The teasers leading up to this book had me starving for the characters: Killian is the big burly alphahole type, but he becomes an absolute sucker for Arianna, and it melted my heart. Zach has that golden retriever energy - he's a trouble-maker and can't stop talking to save his life. Then there's Micah, Zach's twin, who has internalized all his suffering and is a recluse with his art. Willow unlocks the tattered and battered hearts of all these men - her kindness and her big, big heart threaten to swallow them all whole. Even after everything she's been through, she still finds space in her broken, beaten heart to envelope them. It was so beautiful to see how she carefully dismantles the war-torn walls she put up to protect herself and her daughter. She slowly learns to trust and lean on people; she finds a new family in Briar Valley, something she so desperately missed and craved for so long.

The way this book ended had me in pieces. My fear and anxiety ratcheted up several notches, and I won't be able to rest until I know what happens in book 2!

I like this book. Mystery starts out good. I like all the safer security books. Mr. Little vanilla, I mean, yeah, they have some dark parts, but other than other than that, they're still a little vanilla. But it's a nice read at your own peril.

I started the Briar Valley books after reading Blackwood and then Sabre. I love the badass FMC's, who give me the strength to deal with my own issues. I love that there are snippets pf previous characters through each book, all linking together. I hope there is light at the end of the tunnel for Willow and Arianna.

    You beautiful cruel woman.

You did it again. This story is beautiful and I loved every second of it. You know the author does dark romances when you somehow feel that this story is « lighter » than her others.

I am deeply in love with those characters and that kid is just the cutest.

I am so sad I have to wait for the ending.

PLEASE READ TRIGGER WARNINGS BEFORE READING THIS BOOK.

Okey thissss book…. I love it, I’ve been in a readers slump sooo big, it has been long since I had one and this bookkkk, it just took me out of it. It is soo good an even though it’s chapters are extremely long I love it, every time I finish one chapter I supposedly was going to stop and do other things and I just couldn’t. True to be told it’s and extremely graphic book and not for anyone but for me it was good. PLEAS CHECK TRIGGER WARNINGS BEFORE READING. At the beginning it was really slow for me and it took me quite the time to read it but then I just couldn’t put it down. Love every single one of the main characters and the way they just handle everything. The MMCs are just *chefs kiss* and will keep things out them for a while. I love the unconditional love the FMC has for her daughter and the strength she pulls from that love. CANT WAIT FOR THE SECOND ONE.

My heart is bleeding right now, this story is so much emotional and traumatizing that I don’t have many words to express what I am feeling right now. I knew the end was coming the way it came but it still hurts the same. I want the second book now, I want to know the conclusion and the happy ending Willow deserves. The journey was not easy for her in this book but trying to find herself of what she can be is heartening, but what hurts the most is that everything has turned upside down and now is back to square one.

It’s my first book from the author and loved the writing style, I would definitely be looking forward to reading her other books too. She birthed life to this story with all the tears and laughs all along the way to the point we are at now. Killian, Micah, and Zach are all different personality people with trauma in their past but they prove themselves to be amazing human beings. I hope they can come out with ways to save Willow from the inevitable circumstance.

The characters are all suffering in their own way but are mentally strong to come out of their shells. The little Angel Arianna is the sweetest and the apple of the eye. I wanted to scream and punch so many times in the book that I lost count of it now. I know from where Willow is coming hiding things but it didn’t ease out the fact that revealing truth could have done things differently. My head is a mess right now and October seems too far for the Duet to complete.

    It’s a 4.5⭐️ for me.
